What Government Did Today

Release Time:  For Immediate Release The United States applauds the United Nations Human Rights Council’s establishment today of the first-ever UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of assembly and association.   The United States co-sponsored the resolution creating this mechanism with a broad cross-regional group of 62 countries, including original co-sponsors the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Lithuania, the Maldives, Mexico and Nigeria.   President Obama said last week at the UN General Assembly in New York that the “arc of human progress has been shaped by individuals with the freedom to assemble,” and he urged the international community “to embrace and effectively monitor norms that advance the rights of civil society and guarantee its expansion within and across borders.”  Passage of this resolution delivers on that call to action and reflects the universal recognition that promotion of human rights is a moral and pragmatic necessity.  The new Special Rapporteur will be a strong, independent and credible voice to highlight the growing threats to assembly, association and civil society, while developing best practices for the protections of those rights.

Release Time:  For Immediate Release I join all those observing National Voter Registration Month and renew the call for all qualified citizens to register to vote if they haven’t done so already.   Many states have early deadlines and registration requirements for those wishing to participate in this fall’s elections, and I encourage everyone to get informed and get involved.   A healthy, vibrant democracy depends on the full participation of its citizens – and that’s something we can all agree should transcend party or ideology.   Every qualified citizen not only has the right to vote, but also a greater civic responsibility to exercise that right – and play your part in the life of this country.

Statement by the Press Secretary on H.R. 3081

Release Time:  For Immediate Release The President called Prime Minister David Cameron today to convey the good news that the U.S. Senate provided its Advice and Consent to the U.S.-U.K. Defense Trade Cooperation Treaty last night.  The ratification of the Treaty was a high priority for both the President and the Prime Minister, and its passage is evidence of the broad, bipartisan support that undergirds the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.  The President noted that implementation of the Treaty will generate jobs for both of our economies, and further deepen the close ties and cooperation between our countries.  The President and the Prime Minister also discussed our close ongoing counterterrorism cooperation, and agreed on the importance of advancing the Middle East Peace process
