Today, the Senate took bipartisan action to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. Now, it’s time for the House to move quickly and pass the bill. In 2012, we should be beyond questioning the need for the Violence Against Women Act. This law has been overwhelmingly successful since it was first enacted 17 years ago to improve the criminal justice response to this violent crime and to assist those who experience this abuse. Since then, the law has twice been reauthorized with the broad support of members of both parties. It should still be bigger than politics today. We’ve made a lot of progress, but the Violence Against Women Act is as important today as it’s ever been. The Senate’s action today reaffirms that addressing this problem is bigger than politics. Now the House needs to act so the President can sign this vital legislation as soon as possible. ###

East Room 2:42 P.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT: Please, everybody, have a seat. Have a seat. Good afternoon. Now, I heard last year, with this trophy on the line, Jon Davis said, "You don’t get to meet the President every day." Today, you do. (Laughter.) Congratulations to the Fighting Falcons on winning their second straight and record 18th Commander-in-Chief Trophy last season. (Applause.) There we go. I’m happy to meet you, too. (Laughter.) And welcome, everybody, to the White House. Now, this trophy, which by the way is the biggest trophy — I give a lot of these out — (laughter.) This is the monster of all trophies here. This trophy has logged a lot of miles just jetting back and forth between Cadet Field House and the White House the past couple of years. And I’m looking forward to seeing it again when I visit Colorado Springs next month.

President Obama is calling on the House of Representatives to pass a bipartisan transportation bill that would repair crumbling roads and bridges and support construction jobs in communities all across America. According to a new report, 90 percent of these construction jobs are middle class jobs. The Senate passed the bill with the support of Democrats and Republicans because if the bill stalls in Congress then constructions sites will go idle, workers will have to go home, and our economy will take a hit.
